King relates to the Jewish community by referencing to the respected philosopher, Martin Buber, who understood segregation very well due to being treated as a subordinate himself. However, King also intends to speak to the activists by presenting the philosopher, Socrates, and explaining just as Socrates felt that it was necessary to create a tension in the mind so that individuals could rise from the bondage of myths and half-truths to the unfettered realm of creative analysis and objective appraisal (King 2). In other words, Dr. King states that if Socrates was of good character and was correct in creating tension so individuals minds could grow, then tension is good in order for the people to become stronger individuals such as the African Americans. Thus, Dr. King establishes a connection with not only the clergymen but a broader audience by alluding to important figures in order to reason his presence in Birmingham and possibly lead the public to change their stance on racial injustice. Branching out from the appeal of ethos and allusion, Dr. King uses imagery as well as pathos to affect the audiences emotions with the intentions to spark the public audiences desire to take action and end racism and inequality with African Americans. Thus, King illustrates the negative effects segregation has on African Americans by stating, vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will and drown your sisters and brothers at whimwhen you have seen hate-filled policemen curse, kick, brutalize, and even kill your black brothers and sisters (King 2). By depicting a violent scene, King successfully explains to the audience the daily struggles and obstacles individuals of color go through by calling for empathy, compassion, and, perhaps, guilt since these violent scenes took place in public areas, such as the streets where everyone could observe, and refrained from helping. In other words, Dr. Kings audience cannot argue otherwise with his statements that such things have happened. Not only does King intend to present the physical damage segregation has had on African Americans, but also states the emotional damage when he explains, You suddenly find your tongue twisted and your speech stammering as you seek to explain to your six-year-old daughter why she cant go to the public amusement park that has just been advertised on television, and see tears welling up in her eyes when she is told that Funtown is close to colored children, (King 2). In other words, although it is not physical abuse, having separate parks is also a form of emotional abuse. Thus, by presenting this specific situation between an African American parent and child, Dr. King explains his frustration as a parent having to take away his daughters innocence by having to open up her eyes to demonstrate how colored individuals are treated in the world. In addition, King also states, when you see the vast majority of your twenty million Negro brothers something in an airtight cage of poverty in the midst of an affluent society (King 2). King further demonstrates the hate society has towards African Americans and rejects it by calling it an airtight cage giving the reader a sense of a suffocating area. Thus, the image of a tight and closed area, trapped with other people and not being able to liberate oneself to join the those who are free, accurately explains to the audience the daily struggles of an African American individual. Overall, by using imagery and pathos, King gives an opportunity to the clergymen and the public audience to reconsider their stance in the society and justifies his nonviolent actions towards racial injustice with explanations illustrating images which evoke sympathy. Each plant was initially tested for drop in CO2 after two minutes of light exposure and then final measurements were obtained within seven minutes. In 1920, his father died of a heart attack at age 35 when Bill was 7 years old. Bill did badly in school. The State of Minnesota determined that he would be a burden on society so he was placed in the Faribault State School for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic. He remained there for the next 44 years, never saw his mother or two older sisters again. Bill wasnt autistic. He was opposite: a born people-pleaser who said hello to strangers in the street. At the Faribault, they hadnt tested his IQ until he had already been there for thirteen years. He was never taught to read or write or even how to tell the time. In 1964, in the new waves of reform, Bill was moved to a halfway house and worked odd jobs to support himself. He became a handyman at a country club where Barry Morrow, a filmmaker, and his wife befriended him. Morrow made life a bit more comfortable for Bill and became his guardian. When he took a post at the University of Iowa, Bill followed him to Iowa City, and became the sole proprietor of Wild Bills Coffee Shop on the campus, in which he excelled. They are â€Å"star-crossed lovers†, with their destiny pre-determined; they and other humans have no control. Instead the control lies with fate and God. The lovers are â€Å"fortune’s fools†. This dependency on fate and otherworldly powers lend their love a sense of being something heavenly, â€Å"hanging in the stars†. With their love, they are able to rise above their world and everyone else. Their love is a means to escape the world of reality and to create their own world of darkness. This world of darkness is their consequential deaths, because their love is â€Å"death-marked†. Their love is too passionate and powerful to remain in their world, ruled by family hate and violence. Shakespeare describes love in terms of sight and appearances. Romeo and Juliet’s love is blind, they first meet at a ball, where Romeo is â€Å"covered in an antic face† and Juliet’s identity is unknown to him. Their first meeting is love at first sight. Romeo has â€Å"ne’er saw true beauty till this night† and this shows their love’s dependency on sight. During their second meeting at the balcony, Juliet asks Romeo to â€Å"doff thy name†, as names are also a type of disguise and mask. Despite both of them admitting that they love each other, their love is heavily depended on their sight and the appearance of the other person. This theme is an important element of Shakespeare’s portrayed love because the play itself is based on sight, appearances and masks l ike the family name. In the play, a common theme is contrasting images of light and dark. Shakespeare uses these images of light and dark often in terms of light and day. Most of Romeo and Juliet’s meetings happen at night. At the Capulets ball, Romeo’s first description of Juliet is that â€Å"she doth teach the  torches to burn bright†. To Romeo, Juliet, the â€Å"fair sun† will be forever associated with light. But to Juliet, she links Romeo, â€Å"bescreened in night†, with darkness and the moon. In the morning after their wedding night Romeo and Juliet argue whether it is light or dark. If it is dark, they are able to stay with each other for longer, but since it is the â€Å"lark, the herald of the morn; no nightingale†, the light separates them. Light reveals and exposes, and before the light can expose the truths and realities of their relationship, they are forced to separate. Light and dark can never coexist, and symbolising their love as that show ho w it can never survive in reality. Throughout Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare employs opposing factors. One of the most potent contrasts is how he sets love next to death. Their love has â€Å"sprung from my [their] only hate†. This juxtaposition emphasises their love and how out of place it is in their society they live in. Both love and death are very strong themes all through the play and are linked. Juliet often refers to death, almost subconsciously. If she does not meet Romeo, she thinks that her â€Å"grave is like to be my [her] wedding bed†. Juliet orders that when Romeo dies, he should be cut â€Å"out in little stars†. These are not only foreshadowing the lovers imminent deaths, but the constant link between love and death in the play. They spend one night together, and the next morning Juliet comments how she imagines him â€Å"dead at the bottom of a tomb† and that he â€Å"lookst pale† Romeo replies that so does she. Exactly a day later, they are lying together again, dead in the tomb. Their love is so passionate and intense, but â€Å"violent delights have violent ends†. Instead of being that type of love that pushes and protects them from violence and death, their type of love pushes them towards it. The â€Å"violent ends† are the lovers’ suicide, they must finally meet death to preserve their love. Shakespeare does not want to portray the sweet, gentle and almost childish love, like the love Romeo thought he had for Rosaline. Instead he wanted to portray Romeo and Juliet’s love as powerful, violent, passionate, and as intense as death. Because of the way in which Shakespeare employs images and common themes, the play records Romeo and Juliet’s evolving love, from their metaphorical and  heavenly meetings at the ball with â€Å"torches† to their literal and dramatic deaths in the darkness of the mausoleum. Raised in nearby Manassas, VA by his parents, Dr. Thomas and Elizabeth Ewell, he received his initial education locally before electing to embark on a military career. Applying to West Point, he was accepted and entered the academy in 1836. An above average student, Ewell graduated in 1840 ranked thirteenth in a class of forty-two. Commissioned as a second lieutenant, he received orders to join the 1st US Dragoons which were operating on the frontier. In this role, Ewell assisted in escorting wagon trains of traders and settlers on the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails while also learning his trade from luminaries such as Colonel Stephen W. Kearny. Richard Ewell - Mexican-American War: Promoted to first lieutenant in 1845, Ewell remained on the frontier until the outbreak of the Mexican-American War the following year. Assigned to Major General Winfield Scotts army in 1847, he took part in the campaign against Mexico City. On May 31, he was slightly wounded during a skirmish with Union forces near Fairfax Court House. Recovering, Ewell accepted a commission as a brigadier general in the Confederate Army on June 17. Given a brigade in Brigadier General P.G.T. Beauregards Army of the Potomac, he was present a the First Battle of Bull Run on July 21, but saw little action as his men were tasked with guarding Union Mills Ford. Promoted to major general on January 24, 1862, Ewell received orders later that spring to take command of a division in Major General Thomas Stonewall Jacksons army in the Shenandoah Valley. Richard Ewell - Campaigning in the Valley Peninsula: Joining Jackson, Ewell played key roles in a string of surprising victories over superior Union forces led by Major Generals John C. Frà ©mont, Nathaniel P. Banks, and James Shields. In June, Jackson and Ewell departed the Valley with orders to join General Robert E. Lees army on the Peninsula for an attack on Major General George B. McClellans Army of the Potomac. During the resulting Seven Days Battles, he took part in the fighting at Gaines Mill and Malvern Hill. With McClellan contained on the Peninsula, Lee directed Jackson to move north to deal with Major General John Popes newly-formed Army of Virginia. Advancing, Jackson and Ewell defeated a force led by Banks at Cedar Mountain on August 9. Later in the month, they engaged Pope in the Second Battle of Manassas. As the fighting raged on August 29, Ewell had his left leg shattered by a bullet near Brawners Farm. Taken from the field, the leg was amputated below the knee. Richard Ewell - Failure at Gettysburg: Nursed by his first cousin, Lizinka Campbell Brown, Ewell took ten months to recover from the wound. During this time, the two developed a romantic relationship and were wed in late May 1863. Rejoining Lees army, which had just won a stunning victory at Chancellorsville, Ewell was promoted to lieutenant general on May 23. As Jackson had been wounded in the fighting and subsequently died, his corps was divided in two. While Ewell received command of the new Second Corps, Lieutenant General A.P. Hill took command of the newly-created Third Corps. As Lee began moving north, Ewell captured the Union garrison at Winchester, VA before driving into Pennsylvania. The lead elements of his corps were nearing the state capital of Harrisburg when Lee ordered him to move south to concentrate at Gettysburg. Approaching the town from the north on July 1, Ewells men overwhelmed Major General Oliver O. Howards XI Corps and elements of Major General Abner Doubledays I Corps. As Union forces fell back and concentrated on Cemetery Hill, Lee sent orders to Ewell stating that he was to carry the hill occupied by the enemy, if he found it practicable, but to avoid a general engagement until the arrival of the other divisions of the army. While Ewell had thrived under Jacksons command earlier in the war, his success had come when his superior had issued specific and precise orders. This approach was counter to Lees style as the Confederate commander typically issued discretionary orders and relied on his subordinates to take the initiative. This had worked well with the bold Jackson and the First Corps commander, Lieutenant General James Longstreet, but left Ewell in a quandary. With his men tired and lacking room to re-form, he asked for reinforcements from Hills corps. This request was refused. Receiving word that Union reinforcements were arriving in large numbers on his left flank, Ewell decided against attacking. He was supported in this decision by his s ubordinates, including Major General Jubal Early. This decision, as well as Ewells failure to occupy nearby Culps Hill, were later severely criticized and blamed in causing the Confederate defeat. After the war, many argued that Jackson would not have hesitated and would have captured both hills. Over the next two days, Ewells men mounted attacks against both Cemetery and Culps Hill but with no success as Union troops had time to fortify their positions. In the fighting on July 3, he was hit in his wooden leg and slightly wounded. As Confederate forces retreated south after the defeat, Ewell was wounded again near Kellys Ford, VA. Though Ewell led Second Corps during the Bristoe Campaign that fall, he later fell ill and turned command over to Early for the subsequent Mine Run Campaign. Richard Ewell - The Overland Campaign: With the beginning of Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grants Overland Campaign in May 1864, Ewell returned to his command and engaged Union forces during the Battle of the Wilderness. Performing well, he held the line at Saunders Field and later in the battle had Brigadier General John B. Gordon mount a successful flank attack on the Union VI Corps. Ewells actions at the Wilderness were quickly offset several days later when he lost his composure during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. Tasked with defending the Mule Shoe salient, his corps was overrun on May 12 by a massive Union assault. Striking his retreating men with his sword, Ewell desperately attempted to get them to return to the front. Witnessing this behavior, Lee interceded, berated Ewell, and took personal command of the situation. Ewell later resumed his post and fought a bloody reconnaissance in force at the Harris Farm on May 19. Moving south to the North Anna, Ewells performance continued to suffer. Believing the Second Corps commander to be exhausted and suffering from his previous wounds, Lee relieved Ewell shortly thereafter and directed him to assume oversight of the Richmond defenses. From this post, he supported Lees operations during the Siege of Petersburg (June 9, 1864 to April 2, 1865). During this period, Ewells troops manned the citys entrenchments and defeated Union diversionary efforts such as attacks at Deep Bottom and Chaffins Farm. With the fall of Petersburg on April 3, Ewell was forced to abandon Richmond and Confederate forces began retreating west. Engaged at Saylers Creek on April 6 by Union forces led by Major General Philip Sheridan, Ewell and his men were defeated and he was captured. Richard Ewell - Later Life: Transported to Fort Warren in Boston Harbor, Ewell remained a Union prisoner until July 1865. Paroled, he retired to his wifes farm near Spring Hill, TN. A local notable, he served on the boards of several community organizations and also managed a successful cotton plantation in Mississippi. Contracting pneumonia in January 1872, Ewell and his wife soon became gravely ill. Lizinka died on January 22 and was followed by her husband three days later.
